Drew Gibson & Standard Clo Co. Creating Partnerships Outside of the Sport.

As you may know, many professional disc golf players make a bulk of their money from sponsorship deals with the top disc manufacturing brands in the sport. Paul McBeth recently tabbed a 10 year, $10M deal with Discraft setting a tone for the future. Discraft along with Innova, Prodigy, Discmania, and MVP sponsor a majority of the top players.

Unfortunately, the purses at DGPT and A-tier tournaments are too small for players to make a good living without additional income. Forcing many players to work outside of the sport to keep their dream alive, or make sacrifices like living in their car or RV.

Few players have looked outside of the sport for this income. This is where Drew Gibson has recently made a splash. Gibson recently announced on his Instagram page that he is now a part-owner of the clothing brand Standard Clo Co. Creating a revenue source outside of disc golf while using his platform to grow the brand. Standard Clo Co. is a lifestyle action sports brand located out of Sacramento, CA.

This will be an interesting trend to follow in the sport. We are seeing these players finally get the recognition they deserve whether on social media or YouTube. They should all be using their platforms to secure partnerships in different industries. Not only will this help these players make a living but it will help bring in new fans to the sport.

As for companies outside of Disc Golf, I would recommend looking into the growth of the sport in the past 5 years. Viewership and disc sales have increased significantly and YouTube is allowing people all over the world to stay up to date and involved. Now would be the time to invest in professional disc golf and earn a familiarity with the community and build relationships with the players. In the near future, expect more health/fitness and outdoor/adventure companies looking to sponsor events and players and get in on the ground floor of this ever-growing sport.
